Collection of the Year: Merlot from Sonberk is a wine for a dignified celebration

Seven of our wines have been included in the Collection of the Year according to creators of the guide called Best Wine of the Czech Republic. In recent weeks, we have almost all of them introduced on the blog, and today is the time for the last one - our only red - Merlot.

Being the last one makes sense. We already have the last few bottles of the 2017 edition, and we will wait for the 2018 edition until the autumn. If we can advise, this is exactly the wine you want to drink to celebrate the end of the state of emergency when you can see your friends again. We have it in classic bottles, but the 2016 edition also in Magnum bottles of 1.5 liters, so you can handle the celebration in a larger number of people.

One of the reasons Merlot is soon gone is that his bushes make up only a small part of our vineyard. They were planted among the last, a little extra, but over the years of Sonberk's existence, wine has become one of our and your most significant favorites. Thanks for what? Probably a combination of sun and heat that the grapes get on the slope on which the bushes grow. Or strict harvest reduction. We keep less than a kilogram of grapes from each bush.

Olda´s art in the cellar is also essential. The wine matures for 12 months in François Frères oak barrels. The result has the smell of blackberries and cherry syrup and the taste of burnt wood and plum jam. And it has earned a lot of recognition at competitions.

Last year our Merlot became the absolute winner in its category at the Prague Wine Trophy, where Czech and foreign wines are evaluated together. Similarly, a year before, it shone at the Oenoforum conference, one of the few national events held under the auspices of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine. And recently, the authors of the Czech magazines Wine & Degustation and Wine and Style picked it up on their pages. So it also means that you cannot mistake this wine to celebrate the end of an emergency.
