Last time when presenting wine from the Collection of the Year, we talked about dry Palava of Sonberk as a speciality. So if this is a speciality, then the Pálava Straw Wine is even more significant. This is due to the bottle of 250 ml in which this wine is sold, and especially its content, which is a dessert wine with 197 grams of residual sugar per litre.
The term “straw” means that the grapes were left to dry for about five months before the must is pressed. Thanks to this, sugar is more concentrated. The drying process is traditionally done on straw, but in Sonberk, we use individual grates to allow better air circulation. We have them since the founding of the winery since our winemaker Olda Drápal knew he would create straw wine. “We wondered for a while what kind of variety it would be. After some time of testing, the final choice was on Palava because it has firm skin, so it is suitable for long grape laying,” explains Olda.
In the Collection of the Year awarded by the creators of the guide Best Czech wines is this variety of Pálava from the year 2016, which was created at Sonberk about 4500 bottles. Specifically, it is mainly bought directly in the winery. Sonberk visitors are usually attracted by its atypical packaging or a distinctive sweet taste with tones of dried fruit.
“We say this wine is a diet dessert. It is great for a multicourse dinner if you don't have enough space for dessert, but you still want something sweet. It's a wine for gastronomy,” explains our sales and marketing director Dáša Fialová. However, she has seen many bottles of wine sold directly from a wine shop, mainly by Asian tourists. The popularity of this wine is partly because in 2018 received a gold medal and 96 points at the famous Decanter World Wine Awards.
